The Allure of Single Vineyard Wines in Rioja

In the world of wine, the term single vineyard is gaining recognition, especially in the Rioja wine region of Spain, where it's known as Viñedo Singular. But exactly what does single vineyard mean, and why is it capturing the attention of wine enthusiasts and collectors? In this blog post, we'll explore what makes single vineyard wines unique and why they're becoming the stars of Rioja.

What Is a Single Vineyard Wine?

To begin the discussion of what is a single vineyard wine, let's take a step back and look at what it isn't. In the wine industry, most commercial wines are crafted by combining grapes from various vineyards across a region.

This approach allows winemakers to maintain a consistent style, adapting to yearly variations in climate and grape quality to ensure that beloved classics like French Chardonnay always deliver as expected.

Single vineyard wines, however, are made of grapes sourced from, you guessed it, a single vineyard. What sets them apart is their ability to encapsulate the essence of a specific place, known as terroir.

Shifting Focus From Grape Variety to Terroir

The concept of terroir includes elements such as soil composition, microclimate, elevation, sun exposure, and vineyard management practices.

Crafting these wines demands an elevated level of craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail throughout the winemaking process. Winemakers monitor and tailor their techniques to bring out the best qualities of grapes from that specific vineyard. This hands-on approach and precision contribute to the excellence and complexity of the final wine.

Are Single Vineyard Wines Better?

Wine&More Team reminds us not to mistake the single vineyard term as a synonym to quality. "We think it's best not to look at single vineyard wines as better or worse, but instead just that snapshot of a time and place in the world," they point out.

While these wines can exhibit exceptional uniqueness, they are also more susceptible to unfavorable weather conditions that may affect grape quality.

The legislation in Spain, however, doesn’t allow just anyone to label their wines as Viñedos Singulares.

Viñedo Singular in the Rioja Wine Region

In Rioja, Spain, earning the prestigious label of a single vineyard wine requires adherence to specific criteria and regulations introduced in 2017.

"When Rioja's Consejo Regulador announced that it was introducing a new tier of Viñedos Singulares, the move was heralded as revolutionary. But in some respects, it was just an attempt to impose a legal framework on a category that already existed, at least informally. [...] Fine wine market is (mostly) moving towards brands with a greater sense of place,"

Most notably, it's required that production, aging, storage, and bottling happen in the same winery, grapes are harvested by hand, and the vineyard is at least 35 years old, as indicated by Qualified Designation of Origin (QDO)

The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture grants the use of the Viñedo Singular name on wine labels after a rigorous evaluation process, which includes two blind wine tastings by six experts. This stringent, annual procedure ensures that the term signifies an exceptional product in the case of Rioja wines.

Diversity of the Rioja Wine Region

The Rioja region is renowned for its diversity, ranging from the higher altitudes of Rioja Alta to the warmer and more Mediterranean-influenced Rioja Baja. Each subregion, with their distinct soils, microclimates, and elevations, creates unique grape growing conditions.

This diversity makes the concept of single vineyard wines in Rioja incredibly intriguing. By focusing on a specific vineyard within this mosaic, wine enthusiasts can capture the essence of a particular terroir and its intricate nuances.

In 2023, 133 vineyards owned by 81 producers are classified as Viñedo Singular. Although their popularity is rising, these exceptional vineyards constitute a mere 0.33% of Rioja's expansive vineyard landscape. Such scarcity elevates them to the realm of true exclusivity.
